About NEWS CENTER Maine

WCSH 6

Originally headquartered at the Congress Square Hotel (hence the call letters "CSH"), WCSH-TV began broadcasting on Sunday afternoon, December 20, 1953. Founded by the Rines family, owners of the Congress Square Hotel and WCSH Radio, the television station was a natural addition. In 1977, under the leadership of Mary Rines Thompson WCSH 6 was moved to One Congress Square, where we continue to operate today.

WCSH 6 has produced many favorite local programs including Romper Room, Weekday, Youth Cavalcade and The Dave Astor Show as well as Bill Green's Maine and 207.

Community service is a key part of the success of WCSH 6. Former projects have included: Teens Who Care, Alive & Well, and the Sidewalk Art Festival. Current projects include 6 Who Care, Coats & Toys for Kids, Feed Maine, Project Heat. Many additional events are the result of successful partnerships with nonprofit organizations and community-minded businesses. In the mid-90's, WCSH 6 expanded program delivery to include WCSH6.com.

WLBZ 2

Under the ownership of Murray Carpenter, the station signed on the air September 12, 1954 as WTWO, broadcasting from the same building on Mount Hope Avenue in Bangor as it does today. Since the station was not affiliated with a network, most programs were locally-produced and live, including the quirky Eddie Driscoll. The station also brought the Bangor area its first live children's program Aunt Edna's Lollypop Shop.

Early in the summer of 1958, William Rines took over WTWO, renaming it WLBZ. Soon after, the station joined the networks of NBC. As the station grew, local news became a priority, as did the commitment to community. Over the years, WLBZ 2 adopted numerous initiatives like the Jefferson Awards, and created the 2 Those Who Care Awards, which recognize and show appreciation for volunteerism and community service.

In the mid-90's, WLBZ 2 expanded program delivery to include WLBZ2.com.
