Woman's body found in Augusta apartment building

Joan Hadley's death likely took place in the last two weeks, Maine's Public Safety spokesperson said.

AUGUSTA, Maine — A woman's body was found mid-morning Tuesday at a five-unit apartment complex in Augusta, according to Maine State Police.

Building managers discovered the body at 37 Water St., located along the Kennebec River near Bond Brook, about a mile from the capitol.

According to Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland, state police on Wednesday said the body was likely that of Joan Hadley, 54. Her last known address was in Windsor, McCausland said, but for the last couple years she had been a transient staying in the Augusta area.

McCausland described the case Tuesday as an "unattended death under investigation," and although he stopped short of calling the death suspicious, he said police had a number of questions they wanted answered.

The Associated Press on Tuesday, citing the Kennebec Journal, reported that police were treating the death of the woman as suspicious.

McCausland said Wednesday that there were no obvious signs of foul play and that the death likely took place in the last two weeks.

Detectives tracked down the man who rents the apartment after initially having trouble contacting him, and he confirmed that Hadley had his permission to stay there while he was staying elsewhere, according to McCausland. She was not officially a tenant of the home, authorities said Tuesday.

Hadley’s relatives were notified and a positive ID from the medical examiner's office was expected to take place following DNA testing.

No immediate cause of death had been determined as of Wednesday, and additional testing was scheduled to take place, McCausland said.
