Farewell to 41: Kennebunk residents pay final tribute to President Bush

Dozens of people gathered Sunday afternoon at Gooch's Beach in Kennebunkport to say a final farewell to President George H.W. Bush.

KENNEBUNKPORT (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- One week after his passing, residents of Kennebunk and surrounding towns continue to honor the life and legacy of President George H.W. Bush.

Dozens of people gathered Sunday afternoon at Gooch's Beach in Kennebunkport to say a final farewell to our 41st President. The Bush family spent much of their summers in Maine walking their dogs on that beach, chatting with the locals and enjoying the view.

"President Bush and Mrs. Bush were a very vital part of our community." Kennebunk resident Beverly Bangs said. "It's going to be hard without them."

Residents came with their four-legged friends and silly socks to honor Bush 41.

A number of people shared personal stories. Everyone who spoke said both the President and Mrs. Bush had a way of making everyone feel like family and that they will be greatly missed.

"He just loved this place, this was his life," Daisy White said about the President's love for Maine. "We're fortunate to be here, it's really feeling bittersweet but very privileged."

The group also sang 'Silent Night' for the President and filled a massive poster board with handwritten notes that will be mailed to the Bush family in Texas.
