Mainers react to the passing of soul icon Aretha Franklin

"Why are people just buying the records now? They've been good all along" said Bob Wirtz, owner of Enterprise Records.

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) - Local residents and radio stations paid tribute to Aretha Franklin, the 'Queen of Soul', who died Thursday morning.

Franklin died in her Detroit home, following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

"Much respect and much love and many thanks to the Queen, Aretha Franklin " said Herb Ivy, "The Captain", on WBLM radio station.

Franklin was 76-years-old and, in her more than 50-year career, recorded more albums and memorable songs than just about anybody. Now those memorable songs are becoming a bit of a collector's item.

"18 Grammys, 20 number one hits, and then beyond the numbers -- how she broke down barriers.

Aretha Franklin is known as much for her hit music as her social activism." said Ivy.

"Why are people just buying the records now? They've been good all along" said Bob Wirtz, owner of Enterprise Records.

"This isn't black or white music. It's great music." said Ivy.
