Snowy weather kicks fall cleanup to the curb

With conditions forecasted to get worse this week, yard work and typical lawn waste cleanup may be put off until spring.

(NEWS CENTER Maine) -- Public works departments across Maine are prepared for this week's early winter weather. In Bangor, crews are busy using heavy equipment to scoop and scrape frozen and wet leaves packed underneath a dusting of snow.

"We have all our crews trying to get as many leaves out as we possibly can," said Eric Willett, the director of public works for the City of Bangor. "It's not very clean, not very efficient and it's not the best way that we would like to do it."

The City of Lewiston contracts out Casella Waste for trash and yard waste services. An official with Lewiston's Solid Waste division says homeowners should monitor weather conditions and place leaf bags out during regular collection days.

The cities of Portland and South Portland will get to leaf and yard waste after crews remove snow. Both municipalities want residents to remain patient and leave bags curbside for pickup.

This autumn season could affect landscaping businesses' bottom line. Paul Kimble owns Little River Landscape Company and tells NEWS CENTER Maine the rainy weather, since October, and now the snow, is interfering with the final fall cleanup.

"This could be the shortest landscape season me and my colleagues have had," said Kimble. "For me, it definitely cuts out a solid three weeks of work that I would normally be doing."
