April Ice Fishing

Poland, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Many old timers are calling this "as good a winter as they've ever seen." That means it's been cold and snowy. Ice fishing season can continue in Maine's 12 southern counties and that's just fine with Skip Parker and Richard Steeves.

Maine law regarding ice fishing changed in 2010. You can now fish through the ice if you are standing on ice. Conversely, you can fish in open water from a boat which is in water or from shore.

Parker is passionate about the sport and fishes almost every day. " It's been a good winter. I'm enjoying it," Parker told NEWS CENTER.

Steeves is an attorney and still practices part time. However, at Christmas time he decided to really get out and enjoy the winter. "Sitting on the couch one day, I decided, 'let's go the other way.' I went out and bought a snowmobile, and a fish finder."

He jokes that he's still deciding whether this was the correct season to make that decision.

Most years, many southern Maine lakes are open by April first. This year, that's not so.
