JAY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A new outdoor organization has formed and its Executive Director expects it to be Maine's largest in just a few month. The Maine Outdoor Federation is a group that wants to include all outdoor organizations.
"We grew out of the 2004 bear hunting referendum," said Al Smith, the groups new leader. "SAM (Sportsmans Alliance of Maine) organized a bunc off the outdoor organizations and successfully defeated that referendum in 2004 and people realized it was a good idea. So what we're doing now is expanding it."
Smith says more than twenty groups have already joined The Maine Outdoor Federation including The Maine Professional Guides, The Maine Snowmobile Association and The
Sportsman's Alliance of Maine.
Smith is a Jay native who has been the National Federation Director of the Bass Anglers' Sportsfishing Society and the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Federation.
He hopes that all Maine organizations involved in the outdoors will pay fifty dollars a year to be a part of MOF. He points out that his group is an all volunteer non-profit organization.
