PORTLAND, MAINE (NEWS CENTER) — Firefighters from departments all over Maine, New England and beyond came to Two Monument Square in Portland on Sunday to remember the 343 New York City firefighters who gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
It was the third annual Maine 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.
Both firefighters and civilians climbed ten flights of stairs 11 times, representing the 110 flights of stairs inside the World Trade Center in New York City.
Most of the firefighters who made the climb wore up to 70 pounds of equipment. And every climber carried a badge with the name and photo of a firefighter who was killed on 9/11.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to support families of firefighters who die in the line of duty.
