SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--The U. S. Coast Guard station in South Portland is hosting an open house on Saturday, April 17.  Part of the event will be a PADDLESMART Kayak and Canoe Safety Synmposium.

Last year, more than 300 people visited the base to tour the facilities, boats and cutters.  Many took advantage of the paddle safety demonstrations and lectures.

This is the second annual event.  "Last year, we had a great turn out from local partners, commercial vendors and the media," said Lt. Robert Hollis.

The event will run from ten to three on Saturday.  There is no admission.  People who want to have a Coast Guard Auxiliary safety inspection, are invited to bring their paddle craft.  Vehicles will not be allowed on the base.  Personnel will go outside to conduct the inspection. There will also be on the water demonstrations and classroom lecture.

The Coast Guard hopes to use its helicopter in a Search and Rescue demonstration.

There is no need to preregister for this event. For more information, feel free to call Lt. Hollis at (207) 767-0383 or Ensign Allen at (207) 741-5445.
