The Courtney bed keeps kids with special needs safe throughout the night.

MILLINOCKET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Pat Cyr of Millinocket designs four-poster beds for kids with special needs to keep them safe and comfortable throughout the night.

He got the idea after his own daughter, Courtney, who is now 17, was diagnosed with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and autism more than a decade ago. She was only able to sleep two to three hours a day making Cyr concerned that she would hurt herself in the middle of the night if left alone in a bed. Now, the Courtney bed is patented and FDA approved and has helped 18 other families across the country so far.

"The feeling is just wonderful to know that when I call up a family and they're getting such great use out of the bed, it just makes us feel great," Cyr said. "It makes us feel like we've found our calling in life, I guess, to make these beds."

One Courtney bed costs $3,800 plus shipping costs.  Cyr says some families across the US have had success in getting full payment for the bed through state programs and private insurance.  For more information on the Courtney beds, click here.
