ALFRED, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A man from New York was sentenced for his role in the murder of Winston George at his Old Orchard Beach home two years ago.
Rennie Cassimy was originally charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of George. Under a plea deal the murder charge was dropped after he agreed to testify against the other two defendants in the case, Darlene George and Jeffrey Williams. Last week a jury found both George and Williams guilty of murder.
Cassimy admitted being at the George home the night Darlene George's husband Winston was murdered, but says he didn't take part in the killing. His testimony helped the state land a conviction against George and Williams. For that the state dropped the murder charge and recommended an 8-year prison term on the conspiracy to commit murder charge.
"It's not a sentence that i'm particularly thrilled with. It is light for his role in this, however the state recognizes he wasn't the principal in this and it was of some assistance that he testified in the trial", said Assistant Attorney general Lisa Marchese.
The judge accepted the recommendation saying it was a fair resolution to Cassimy's case.
