WINDHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police are investigating a serious accident in the town of Windham.

It happened this morning on Pope Road at the intersection with Swett Road.

The Windham Police Department says shortly after 7:00 this morning, a Subaru Impreza failed to make it around a curve and crossed the center lane, slamming into a Ford Expedition.

The driver of the Subaru, 18-year-old Patrick Thorne, of Standish, was trapped in his vehicle and had to be taken by Lifeflight to Maine Medical Center in Portland. He's in critical condition. There were two passengers in his car and they were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the Expedition, Cynthia Sundquist, of Windham, was also taken to the hospital by ambulance. The passenger in her car was not injured.

Witnesses say Thorne, in the Subaru, was going too fast for the road. Investigators called the Windham Fire Department's ladder truck so they could climb out and take aerial photographs of the scene.
