BELFAST, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--The Maine Attorney General's Office is investigating a police involved shooting in Belfast.

29-year old Ben Thompson of Swanville is listed in critical condition at a hospital in Bangor. Belfast police say they tried to stop Thompson's vehicle shortly before midnight Wednesday because he refused to stop for an officer in Searsport.

The car was eventually stopped at the intersection of Route 141 and Smart Road.

Police say Thompson stepped out of the car with a shotgun and refused to put the gun down. Officials say Thompson was shot by Belfast officer Dan Fitzpatrick.
