SACO, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- An expansion to the Eastern Trail pedestrian route caused some serious traffic Delays Thursday evening. The construction work started just after the evening commute and ended well ahead of schedule.
Crews began work on putting a pedestrian bridge in place to connect the 4.3 mile section of trails between Saco and Old Orchard Beach around 6pm. In order to complete putting the bridge up they closed down route one just north of the 195 connector.
The bridge is an essential piece to the Eastern Trail that stretches from Bug Light Park in South Portland to Kittery. But the work doesn't stop once the bridge is in place. There still is about a weeks worth of work to be done putting concrete decking on the bridge and putting finish work on it.
The Eastern Trail is part of the much larger East Coast Greenway which stretches from Calais all the way to Florida's Key West.
Maine DOT was expecting the bridge work to take 12 hours, originally not expecting to open route one until 6am Friday. However, crews were able to finish up their work on the bridge early and Saco police opened up the closed section of road around 11pm Thursday.
