BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Literacy Volunteers of Bangor is looking to recruit more volunteers as the calendar gets ready to turn to 2012.

Executive Director Mary Lyon says Literacy Volunteers is looking for people for its training program.  Volunteers are trained and are then matched with an adult to work with them and to help improve their reading, writing, and language skills.

Training begins in January and Lyon says the need for volunteers is always important.

"You really can't count the ways that this is going to change somebody's life," Lyon said.  "It will help them be more self-sufficient and independent, but it also helps improve a community, because a more literate community we have a more engaged community and involved community we have as well."
