ALFRED, Maine (AP) -- Dallas Sizemore claims appropriate procedures weren't in place to protect him from fellow inmates who were apparently friends of the victim.

Sizemore was accused of holding a 12-gauge shotgun when it discharged into Scott Vermette's mouth in January 2003. He was awaiting trial at York County Jail when he was assaulted in the shower of the maximum security unit.

Sizemore was knocked to the floor and severely beaten. Two inmates were charged in connection with the assault. Sizemore ultimately pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is currently serving his sentence at the Maine State Prison in Warren.
