Mr. Sulu was played by George Takei, who was born on Apr. 20, 1937.
While most of the original crew spent their entire Starfleet careers serving under Captain Kirk, Sulu left the Enterprise to take command of his own ship in the movie Star Trek VI.
George Takei has led an adventurous life even outside of his work on Star Trek.
He and his family were forced to live in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. He's been an outspoken advocate for gay rights issues since revealing his sexuality in 2005. And for the last six years, he's served as the announcer on the Howard Stern radio show.
