PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland Police Department is trying out a new recruiting approach.

The department produced a series of videos showcasing the kind of work Portland Police officers get to do on the job. The video is being shared over Facebook and YouTube. Chief Michael Sauschuck says more departments across the country are turning to social media to recruit new officers. He believes the videos are a perfect way to show the best potential recruits why Portland is a great city to work for.

"That's where everybody's going," Sauschuck said. "If they want to know about the Portland Police Department they're going to the web, they're going to use social media. So it's a lot easier for us to have these spots on our website where people can just plug right in and really see what the portland police department is about."

There was an additional cost associated with making the videos, so the department will assess the process next year to decide if it's worth the extra money.
