It was May 8, 1984 when the U.S.S.R. announced its boycott of that summer's Olympic Games in Los Angeles.  The Soviets' absence cleared the way for American athletes to dominate the competition, and none more so than Mary Lou Retton.

She is best known for winning the gold medal for individual all-around women's gymnastics.  But she also won two silvers and two bronzes.  Her second place finishes came in the vault and the team competition.  And she finished third in the floor exercises and the uneven bars.
