PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - One of the co-founders of Facebook and his partner are giving up to $100,000 to supporters of a referendum to legalize same-sex marriage in Maine.

Democratic activists Chris Hughes and Sean Eldridge say they'll match donations up to $100,000 over the next four weeks. Mainers United for Marriage, which hopes to raise $25,000 a week during the period, is leading the campaign for the November referendum.

Eldridge says he hopes their support "will motivate others to invest in the campaign."

Hughes is publisher and editor-in-chief of The New Republic, in addition to helping to found Facebook. Eldridge is president of Hudson River Ventures and senior adviser to Freedom to Marry.
