PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Republican Senate candidate Bill Schneider says he'll resign his post as attorney general if he wins his party's nomination.

Schneider said Friday that it wouldn't be possible to give his constitutional office the attention it deserves if he wins the GOP primary on June 12. Schneider is one of six GOP candidates and four Democratic candidates vying to fill Sen. Olympia Snowe's soon-to-be-vacant seat.

Schneider said Friday that too much attention is being given to independent former Gov. Angus King, who hasn't yet submitted his signatures to appear on the ballot. He says those who say the election is King's to lose aren't giving enough respect to voters who'll have the final say.
