SPRINGVALE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Hundreds of people made their way to Maine's Veterans Cemeteries to pay their respects to those who served and sacrificed to protect our country.

"Memorial Day is a real big deal for me, it always has been," explained Sergeant First Class Joel Babb.  "I have been doing this for 15 years.  I'm an infantry man.  I am on my 3rd combat deployment.  I have lost a lot of friends, a lot of people I have seen die right in front of me, that were good friends of mine."

Sergeant Babb was joined by his family and dozens of other veterans at a ceremony to honor the men and women interred at the Southern Maine Veteran's Cemetery.

"I think our country needs to remember what is going on," he added.  "Even though they are here playing video games, or whatever it is they are doing, working an everyday job, there are guys my age and guys twice as young - I've got guys, 19 year old men that work for me, 18 year olds right out of high school - they need to remember that they are out there and they are getting shot at daily."
