(NEWS CENTER) -- Six Republican candidates are competing for the chance to replace Olympia Snowe in the U.S. Senate.

--Rick Bennett is a former president of the Maine Senate, who has been out of elective office for eight years. He is chief executive officer of an investment research company based in Portland.

--Scott D'Amboise is a former selectman in Lisbon, ran for Congress in the 2nd district in 2006. He operates a small business and is currently working as an opthalmic technician.


--Debra Plowman is the assistant republican leader in the Maine Senate, and the co-owner of an overhead-door business in Hampden.

--Bruce Poliquin is Maine's State Treasurer and a former investment manager. He ran unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination for governor two years ago.

--William Schneider is a former legislator, now Maine's Attorney General. He is a former assistant U-S attorney, and a retired Army Captain.


--Charlie Summers is currently Maine's Secretary of State. He is a former regional administrator for the Small Business Asdministration, a former state legislator, a former aide to Sen. Snowe, a commander in the Navy Reserve, and has twice run for Congress in the 1st district.
