GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Officials in the town of Gorham have been keeping their eyes out for a black bear that's been spotted quite a few times in the neighborhood.
Mary-Ellen Moon has never seen a bear in the 20 years she's lived in her home, until about 2 weeks ago, when one walked through her backyard just off of McClellan Road. Animal control officer, Paul Dubay says many people in the area have seen it, some near Rt. 114... even golfers have spotted it down the road at the Gorham Country Club.
He says it's common for wild animals to forage for more food when they can't find much in the forest. He says if you see a bear in your backyard, go back inside, stay out of its way, and in the meantime, keep your trash inside and don't throw any peels into your garden.
One last piece of advice, if you do see a bear, call your local police department. If they need to, they can contact the Maine Warden Service to take care of it.
