ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Three months ago to the day, a shooting in Lamoine left three men injured and one dead. Now, one of the men shot appears in court, charged with murder.
Michael Carter, 30, of Lamoine, has pleaded not guilty to one count of knowing or intentional murder, one count of elevated aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assualt, and illegal possession of a firearm.
According to police, Carter shot and killed 32-year-old Randy Sinclair around 4:30 a.m. on March 11 outside of Carter's Lamoine home on Route 184.
Carter and two other men, 34-year-old Torrey Garland and 25-year-old Joshua McKinney, suffered gunshot wounds that morning. All three have recovered from their injuries.
After a quiet three-month investigation, Carter was charged with murder following a secret indictment last week.
There are still many questions about the events of the shooting, and police and prosecutors have released little information.
Defense attorney Richard Hartley said he is just now receiving evidence from prosecutors.
"To this date, they have not provided the discovery material...and then certainly I will learn much more about what the state says happened in this situation," said Hartley.
Monday may have been Carter's first court apperance, but Sinclair's family members have already made their judgement about the defendant.
"He's a dope head. A jerk. He should go to prison for the rest of his life," said the victim's father, Randy Sinclair Sr. "He's a murderer, and we all know it."
His father was among the 40 spectators in the Hancock County courtroom Monday afternoon.
Sinclair's family members and friends held wallet-sized photos of Randy Sinclair's portrait, captioned with "In Loving Memory."
Outside the courthouse, pick up trucks painted with "RIP Randy" and "Maine needs a death row," were parked along the street.
But the strongest statements came from Sinclair's father.
"[Carter] should go to prison for the rest of his life," said Sinclair Sr. "He doesn't deserve to breathe the air we're breathing."
Other family members expressed a more subdued sadness.
"It was a shock," said Lori Rowley, Sinclair's sister. "My mom is having a hard time coping. Randy was a wonderful person. He would never hurt anybody, and I pray to God Mike Carter does not get bail."
A judge will decide on Wednesday if Carter does recieve bail at an 8:30 a.m. hearing.
