VERONA ISLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Five people had to be rescued from the Penobscot River after their boat capsized in rough waters.
Authorities got the call around 1:00 this afternoon that a boat was capsized near the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
Four people from the boat were able to swim ashore where they were picked up by a nearby boat. The fifth was rescued off the capsized boat.
"At about 1 o'clock this afternoon, a small 20 ought foot fiberglass boat went for a ride down around Verona Island when they got to the southern end of Verona Island they took a wave over the bow and the boat swamped," Maine Marine Patrol Matt Talbot said.
The Maine Marine Patrol is investigating the incident. Bucksport Fire and Orland fire also assisted in the rescue.
