Appalachian Trail hiker drowns in Pierce Pond

BOWTOWN TWP, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine Warden Service says a 20-year-old man drowned while swimming in Pierce Pond Friday evening.

Witnesses say the man had hiked nearly 20 miles on the Appalachian Trail earlier in the day and had attempted to swim across a small cove near the outlet of Pierce Pond.

The Warden Service says the man's body was located in nearly 15 feet of water, and rescue personnel could not retrieve him. 

The victim's name is not being released pending family notification.
