DEXTER, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to mourn and pay their final respects to Army Captain John "Jay" Brainard.
Brainard's funeral was held at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Dexter Saturday afternoon. A motorcade brought Cpt. Brainard through Dexter and to the church before the funeral.
After the funeral, his body was taken to Sawyer Cemetery in Plymouth. Cpt. Brainard's brother Ben Hawthorne said in a previous interview that Brainard wanted to be buried in Sawyer Cemetery next to his grandfather who was a World War II veteran.
The family asked for privacy Saturday and did not want to talk to the media.
Senator Olympia Snowe was at the funeral and said she wanted to attend to show her appreciation for Cpt. Brainard's service in the military.
"I think it is one of the most important duties as an elected official, is to attend these funerals. For the families and for the heroes who die for the freedom and national security interest of our country. And ultimately pay the ultimate price. And it's important for us to convey our profound gratitude and depth of appreciation on behalf of a grateful nation," Senator Snowe said.
Cpt. Brainard was a helicopter pilot in the Army. He died when the helicopter he was piloting crashed in Afghanistan.
