BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- As the state braces for a dose of hot weather this week, there are several ways for people to keep cool in the area.
The Beth Pancoe Municipal Aquatics Center opened last Saturday. City officials in Bangor say that they are expecting it to get busier as the week rolls on. Temperatures across Maine are expected to top 90 degrees and bring an increase in humidity with them.
Health professionals say as with any heat wave, extra care needs to be given to young children as well as the eldery. Those two groups can have a harder time staying hydrated and they are also at greater risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. .
"These conditions {heat exhaustion and heat stroke} really need to be treated," said Carol Higgins Taylor of Eastern Area Agency on Aging, "heat exhaustion...a sponge bath...cooling off...taking fluids... but if ever there's a doubt, call 9-1-1...it's just not worth it risking it."
Officials at Eastern Area Agency on Aging are encouraging seniors to drink every hour during the hot weather. Those seniors on fluid restricted diets should contact their doctors to find out the best way to stay cool.
The Beth Pancoe Municipal Aquatics Center in Bangor will be open for swimming seven days a week. Families can register for swimming lessons online at the website for 'Bangor Parks and Recreation.' Swimming lessons for children are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. THe pool will be open for general swimming from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and family swimming from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. seven days a week.
The Brewer Municipal Pool will be opening on Thursday of this week.
