AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Education officials say Maine's high school graduation rates are rising.
The Department of Education said the percentage of students graduating within four years of entering high school was just shy of 84 percent for the 2010-11 school year, up nearly a percentage point from the previous year.
It was the second straight year of improvement, with the statewide graduation rate improving more than 2 percentage points between 2009 and 2010.
Commissioner Stephen Bowen said girls graduated at a higher rate than boys - 86 percent to about 81 percent - and that about 73 percent of students from low-income families graduated.
