BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Starting next week Boothbay Harbor celebrates the 50th anniversary of Windjammer Days. The three-day event draws thousands of people to the midcoast town every year to enjoy the ships and the sun.
At Shades of Maine, Christina Bournakel says Windjammer Days is very important for local business. "Its huge. It really kicks off our season. Everyone's getting out of school and when the weather's good it's a huge draw. "
Crowds like these will fill the sidewalks and stores, eat at the restaurants, and just enjoy early summer on the Maine coast. June is typically a slow tourist month. So around here, Windjammer days provides a jump start. Just ask the fisherman's wharf.
The traditions of schooners , parade, music, food and fireworks are what bring people here. At Fisherman's, they say next Wednesday will be the restaurants biggest day of the year. And a busy few days for the hotel.
The chamber of commerce says other hotels and inns are also expecting good things from this anniversary year.
