CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (AP) - The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the fatal crash of a small plane just 100 yards from shore near a historic lighthouse in a park packed with visitors on a sunny day.
A four-seat Stinson S108 lost power and crashed into the ocean waters off Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth around noon Sunday. The popular park is home to Portland Head Light.
Officials say the pilot got out of the plane, but was unresponsive by the time he was brought to shore.
Briana Youland of Twitchell's Airport & Seaplane Base in Turner identified the pilot as Dr. Louis Hanson of Durham.
Coast Guard officials say the plane is now lying on the ocean bottom in 60 feet of water, but does not pose an environmental or navigational threat.
