BOOTHBAY HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- History is rife with stories about rivalries between man and machine. On Monday, along Maine's midcoast, it was man, versus boat... versus mother nature.

Local doctor and serious runner Aquilino Alamo, began a very unusual race. Dr. Alamo was trying to beat Captains Joe and Bob Tassi aboard the schooner "Timberwind" in a race from Rockport to Boothbay Harbor.

The doctor's route took him mostly down Route 1 -- about 50 miles.  The schooner needed favorable winds and seas to try and beat the doctor. Both had to deal with today's rainy weather.

Dr. Alamo did it. He beat the schooner with plenty of time to spare...qbout 40 minutes. That was enough time to kick back and meet the Timberwind at the docks to welcome the captains ashore.

The race was a way to kick off this summer's "windjammer days" in Boothbay.
