We're heading back into the 90s today.
No, not like this.
Like THIS.
Maine is still under the broad influence of the Bermuda High offshore, that means southwest winds will continue to pump in hot and humid air through the weekend.
It's not all heat and sun however, Maine is sandwiched between two areas of clouds this morning. Southern Maine is dealing with mid level cloud cover streaming in from an area of showers down across MA, meanwhile northern Maine is generating cloud cover around a warm front sinking towards Bangor. The net effect of the two areas will be a 60/40 mixture of clouds to sun for most of the state. The warm front may even spark a rogue shower or thunderstorm this afternoon near Bangor and then traveling Downeast, but 90% of the state will remain dry. Despite these less than ideal sky cover conditions, temperatures will SOAR. Look for low 90s across most of the state, with mid 90s across southwestern Maine and New Hampshire. Humidity will also be on the high side with dew points flirting with 70 F by the afternoon. (Those dew points, such teases)
Tonight is partly cloudy and mild with most of the night spent in the 70s. It won't be BRUTAL sleeping weather, but it's starting to get uncomfortable with just the windows open.
Sunday will start with full sunshine but clouds will build by the afternoon. There will be what we call a "pre frontal trough" pushing into the mountains by the afternoon so showers will start popping up across New Hampshire and western Maine. My feeling is that these showers and storms won't make it past I-95 to the coast so I'm keeping the coastal communities dry but adding a 30% chance of showers for the rest of the state. Temperatures will be a bit "cooler" as winds shift from southwest to south, allowing more of a fetch off the ocean. Cooler is definitely a relative term however as mid to upper 80s will be widespread.
Most of us will see some showers and thunderstorms overnight Sunday and into Monday morning as a cold front moves through. Some of these storms could produce heavy downpours as the atmosphere is fairly "juiced."
Any early showers clear out by mid morning on Monday and the heat builds back again. Look for upper 80s to low 90s with a mixture of sun and clouds. Instability will be a bit ripe with that front still hanging around so I've placed an isolated afternoon shower in the forecast as well.
Tuesday looks most sunny and hot. Highs in the low 90s likely once again.
This heat streak (likely not an official heat wave) will come to an end by Wednesday afternoon as a cold front pushes in. This front will likely produce some strong thunderstorms as it ushers in cooler, drier air.
Thursday and Friday look MUCH cooler (upper 70s) with a good deal of sunshine.
Mid range signals indicate a nice break from the heat from Thursday to Sunday and then a return to the "Bermuda High blowtorch" heat for next work week.
Oh by the way, along the 90s theme: I'm now going to get this song stuck in your head for a minimum of 36 hours...
