PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland is the latest community to be approved for a charter high school. On Tuesday, the Maine Charter School Commission voted unanimously in favor of plans for the Baxter Academy of Technology and Science.
Last month, the commission rejected Portland's proposal, so the charter school group came back today with revised plans that will delay the start of classes until September 2013. There were also more details on the financial aspects of the plan. Parents and potential students and charter school organizers all say they're all eager to get started.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics will be the core curriculum for the Baxter School. The school will be located in a building on york street in portland. They plan to begin classes with 80 freshmen and 80 sophomores, then add more students in the following years.
