BANGOR, Maine (AP) - A coalition supporting passage of the same-sex marriage proposal on Maine's November ballot plans to announce new supporters, including members of the clergy and faith communities.
A news conference is being held Wednesday afternoon in Bangor by Mainers United for Marriage, the coalition supporting the initiative.
Protect Marriage Maine, which opposes the referendum, also claims support of religious groups.
Washington state and Maryland also have same-sex marriage referendums this fall, and Minnesota voters will decide whether to pass a constitutional amendment to ban it.
Gay marriage is currently legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C.
