HAMPDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER)--After several years of planning and building the new Hampden Academy is almost ready for class.  School officials say they hope the building will be seen as a community center as well and a place of learning.

The school took two years to build.  It has several energy efficient features including solar panels on the roof, natural lighting and a geothermal heating and cooling system. The building will not use any heating oil.

The majority of the funding for the 47 million dollar construction costs are coming from the Department of Education.  6.2 million dollars was donated from residents in Hampden.
