AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Department of Health and Human Services are reviewing security measures after a mailing error by the Department of Health and Human Services has compromised the personal information of about 80 people.

DHHS says a glitch in the department's automated mailing systems sent personal information to the wrong addresses. Some of the information included Social Security numbers and bank account information.

The system started sending out the information back in December, but the problem wasn't discovered until last month. The glitch has been fixed and officials have notified the people whose personal information was shared. DHHS has offered them identity theft insurance, credit reports and credit reporting free of charge.

"We will be addressing the question of how do you prevent this. How do you find it and how do you identify it if it happens. How do you catch it quickly?" said Dale Denno, the Director the Office for Family Independence who oversees the Department's mailing system.  

All of the people who received the personal information have also been notified. They have been given postage-paid envelopes and instructed to return the information.
