Yesterday turned out to be a pretty gloomy and wet day for most, not too great for outdoor activities in general. (Unless you are a child. I was at a family party with a boat load of children and they were in the pool like it was 85 F and sunny. Ah, kids. Somewhat related, is it wrong that I trash talked a 7 year old while playing badminton against him? "Mason...I thought you said you were good at this? I mean it's no big deal, I just wish you weren't a liar" Be quiet Keith! "No really, I'm just asking for everyone here to be frank and honest with themselves about their skill level as it pertains to badminton")
Today is the polar opposite however as high pressure has built down from Canada. Now, typically you'd associate a Canadian high with super DRY air but that's not the case today as dew points linger in the mid 60s. That's really the only negative to the forecast however as mostly sunny skies will persist through the afternoon. There will be a FEW isolated showers in the mountains as the air gets pushed up the higher terrain, but 95% of the state will remain dry and pleasant. Temperatures top out in the low 80s for most of us, some upper 70s along the Downeast coast.
Tonight is mostly clear and quiet. The somewhat high dew point will limit cooling so lows will stay in the upper 50s to around 60. Some patchy fog will develop when/if the temperature and the dew point become equal.
Tuesday is a tougher forecast as far as cloud cover. As the high shifts offshore look for a more moist southwest flow which traditionally favors increased cloud development. As such I'm going to call Tuesday a mixture of sun and clouds with the most favorable ratio of sun to be found along the coastline. Again there will be a chance for some afternoon mountain showers, but this time the risk will be slightly increased due to the more "juiced" flow. Highs in the low to mid 80s.
Some computer models are developing a closed low pressure system for Maine on Wednesday, which would lead to a wet day. HOWEVER, there is strong disagreement with other models keeping us mainly dry. My feeling is that we won't end up with the washout but there will be the chance of afternoon showers both Wednesday and Thursday. I believe the larger, closed off low will stay offshore but it will be close enough to advect some of its moisture into Maine, driving pop up showers and thunderstorms once the sunshine destabilizes the atmosphere. So the bottom line is, plan for some showers on Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday, particularly over the mountains and into western Maine.
Conditions look OK for Friday-Sunday. Nothing awesome, nothing awful...just a mixture of sun and clouds with a few showers.
Speaking of awful, I smoked that same kid in swimming pool basketball later that day. I think he now knows why Uncle Keith only has a doggy-child.
