BELGRADE LAKES, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- Golf is a quiet game. It's more fun when you can take your dog. That's allowed at the Belgrade Lakes golf club, a fact that has generated national publicity for the beautiful lakeside links.
"It's part of making the experience more pleasant for our players," said PGA Professional Kyle Evans. "We started doing this informally and it attracted a lot of attention."
It was written up in a dog blog, then golf blogs, then national golf magazines.
Not many golfers have chosen to bring their canine companions. Golfers are expected to pick up after their dogs and keep them off the greens. Dogs must be under voice command and be able to walk the four miles associated with 18 holes of golf on a championship golf course.
"It's more of a statement about who we are," said Margie Evans the clubhouse manager.
Belgrade Lakes Golf Club was built in 1998 by Maine businessman and philanthropist Harold Alfond. It has been listed in several golf publications as one of the finest courses in Maine.
