FAIRFIELD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- 125 years ago Good Will Hinckley was started as a way to help children orphaned in the Civil War.

Last month it became the first charter school in Maine. The school is also housing the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences which focuses on high school students who need help getting their diploma.

42 students are enrolled at the school so far.

Administrators say becoming a charter school is a good fit because the curriculum has traditionally used hands on agriculturally based methods of teaching students.

Maine is the 41st state to allow charter schools. Class at Good Will Hinckley starts the 18th of September.
