BIG SPENCER MOUNTAIN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Rangers with the Maine Forest Service and area firefighters had their hands full on Monday as they tried to contain a wildfire north of Greenville.

Responders say the fire on Big Spencer Mountain broke out sometime during the day on Sunday. High winds caused it to spread to two acres by Monday. The forest service says there are no homes nearby but there are two radio relay towers on the mountain. One of them is used by the Piscataquis County Sheriff's Office and the Maine Warden Service in responding to area emergencies.

About fifteen firefighters were flown to the site. They've been digging trenches around the flames for most of the day. Rangers also had two helicopters hovering over the scene and dumping water on the fire

"It is the highest priority that we have going in the state right now," said forest ranger Jeffrey Currier, "we have fires that are larger in size but none that are of greater priority to the Maine Forest Service and none of higher complexity."

Forest rangers are hoping to have the fire under control and contained by this evening. At this point they suspect construction on Big Spencer Mountain caused it as construction was going on near those two relay towers.
