AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Republican National Committee has accepted a recommendation calling for an even split of 20 delegates Ron Paul supporters from Maine are claiming, half for Mitt Romney and half for Paul.
Party officials say the recommendation of the Contests Committee went to the party's national committee Thursday. Maine GOP Chairman Charlie Webster says the committee voted to accept it. If supporters of the Texas congressman decide to appeal that vote, the matter goes to the Credentials Committee, which could take up the case Thursday afternoon.
Ron Paul's Maine supporters elected a full slate of 20 delegates to the national convention. There's no expectation that they can get enough support to nominate Paul for president, but they want to show enough political strength to win a prime-time speaking slot for Paul.
