WINTER HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Most people like to relax and spend time outside during the weekend, but more than a hundred people decided they wanted to spend time in a classroom and learn how to help during an emergency.

120 people are taking classes at the Schoodic Education and Research Center in Winter Harbor to become Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members. There are a wide variety of courses that include basic wilderness survival, search and rescue and fire safety.

One of the instructors K.C. Putnam said after Sunday, these people will be able to assist emergency departments during emergency situations.

"If you are in from Bangor to a situation in another part of the state, as a CERT team member we all have the same expectations, we all work off the same game plan. We know what needs to happen how it's done and can trust each other," Putnam said.

The training will continue on Sunday and will finish with an exercise that will make the people who signed up for the training, practice the skills they learned during the weekend.
