GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- For many people, remembering the September 11 attacks brings back pain and grief -- especially for those who lost a loved one. For that reason, the family of Stephen Ward started the Stephen G. Ward Scholarship Fund and 911 Memorial 5k to benefit one Gorham High School student every year.
Katie Hazel says the effort has been to turn the anniversary of 9/11 into something postive.
This year with the help of Maine native, Staff Sergeant Michael Davis, a sister race will be held on September 11, in Afghanistan.
United States Army and Air Force member will run around a track on the Finley-Shields Forward Operating Base in Jalalabad, Nangarhar, Afghanistan.
