PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A new report spells out what has to be done to make offshore wind power off Maine's coast a reality.

The report, "The Turning Point for Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy," will be presented publicly on Thursday. The report was written by the National Wildlife Federation, Environment America and others. It identifies opportunities and barriers for offshore wind power becoming a reality in Maine in the near future.

Maine has immense untapped offshore wind energy potential.

The University of Maine leads a consortium of nonprofits, utilities and businesses whose goal is to generate 5 gigawatts of power by 2030, using floating turbines located 20-50 miles offshore.
