PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After months of hard work, an ice arena in Portland reopened Saturday.
The Portland Ice Arena hosted a grand re-opening, after upgrading the arena's cooling systems. The new system will allow for a thinner ice surface, greatly reducing the electrical bill.
The improvements will also help keep the surface level, whereas the old system caused frost heaves and made gameplay difficult.
The 625-thousand dollars for the project came from an energy efficiency bond approved back in 2010. It allowed the city to borrow up to $11-million for improvement projects.
