HODGDON, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- A Special Forces soldier who was born in Houlton has died. SFC Aaron A. Henderson died from wounds he received from an improvised explosive device.

SFC Henderson died Monday at the hospital at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. Henderson was a graduate of Hodgdon High School. On the school sign, there was a message that stated "our thoughts and prayers are with the Henderson family."

The flag at the high school was also flying at half staff. One of Henderson's former teachers and coaches, Malcolm Nesbitt, said Henderson was a personable, hardworking and trusting young man who always had a smile on his face. Nesbitt also said Henderson liked science class and the outdoors, but it came as no surprise to Nesbitt that Henderson joined the military.

"He was a great asset to our school, and he's gonna be dearly missed and we are all in shock today. We really didn't know how to take it all. We heard yesterday that he'd been in that accident, that he was stabilized, but then this morning we get the news that he didn't make it. And it was just like running into a brick wall," Nesbitt said.
