FREEPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
On Saturday, October 6th, the Freeport Historical Society will host its 3rd Annual Barns & Quilts tour where you can travel, with two experts, to four area properties, exploring barns from different eras. Each barn is teamed up with at least one antique quilt (from the same era as the barn.) Our experts discuss barns and quilts-their similarities (the "national mood" can affect colors and patterns in a quilt!), distinctions, and their practical and iconic qualities, as it relates to American life. The tour ends at the contemporary timberframe barn of designer/builder John Libby where old- time music, cider, a contemporary quilt display and timberframe barn frames await.
On Sunday is their 37th Annual Pettengill Farm Day. This is a unique little festival taking place at a historic saltwater farmstead. Of particular interest is the Master Trades area ( featuring slate carving, dry stone wall building, rug hooking, iron forging, apple pressing and more), antique tool/equipment demos, oxen/horse pulling, 19th c magician, acoustic music, saltbox house tours, hula hooping/kiteflying/sackraces/geocaching and more.
