LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Critics of the mayor in Lewiston, Maine, say they've collected hundreds of signatures calling for him to resign because of remarks he made on a radio program about the city's Somali population.
The Maine People's Alliance says Mayor Robert Macdonald should step down for telling the British Broadcasting Corp. that the city's immigrants should "accept our culture and leave your culture at the door."
The group says members of Lewiston's Somali community, other Lewiston residents and local elected officials are gathering Thursday morning at Lewiston City Hall to speak out against the remarks.
Macdonald has since tried to clarify his comments, saying immigrants should try and assimilate into American culture, but not that they need to give up their language, religion or traditions.
